The committee was appointed on June 21, 2014. As the work could not be completed, the PSC’s term was extended till May 12, 2015, through a motion moved in Parliament this morning by Chief Government Whip Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on behalf of the Leader of the House.
The PSC, headed by Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, comprises 19 government members including Prof. G. L. Peiris, Maithripala Sirisena, W. D. J. Seneviratne, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Douglas Devananda, Susil Premajayantha, A. L. M. Athaulla, DEW Gunasekera, Rishad Bathiudeen, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Wimal Weerawansa, Basil Rajapaksa, Lakshman Seneviratne, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Muthu Sivalingam, Dr. Sudrashini Fernandopulle and Janaka Bandara.
The UNP, TNA, JVP and JHU have boycotted the committee.
The motion moved by Minister Gunawardena said, "In terms of Standing Order No.96, this Parliament grants the Select Committee of Parliament, to recommend and report on political and constitutional measures to empower the people of Sri Lanka, to live as one nation, appointed by the Speaker, on 21st June 2013, a further extension of time till May 12, 2015 as the Committee is unable to report its findings to Parliament within the time limit granted by the motion agreed to by the Parliament on 19th June 2014."
