    President Rajapaksa’s name proposed for prestigious Bharat Ratna award – Indian media Featured

    Leader of the Bharatiya Janatha Party Dr Subramanian Swamy has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government confers Bharat Ratna award on President Mahinda Rajapaksa under whose leadership the LTTE was eliminated, Indian media reports said.


    "This elimination of the LTTE must be recognised in India as a welcome contribution to our national security, Dr Swamy said in a letter to Modi.


    The Indian prime minister has acknowledged receipt of Dr Swamy's letter.


    Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of India. Instituted on 2 January 2m 1954, the award is conferred “in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order”


    Recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Indian Prime Minister to the country’s President.


    Receivers of this prestigious award include Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Mother Teresa and the late South African President Nelson Mandela. (Special Reporter/HC)
