    President declares open Air-Force Aquatic Sports Complex Featured

    President Maithripala Sirisena declared open the Air-Force Swimming Pool Complex in Ratmalana yesterday evening (8 Sep).

    The new state-of-the-art facility is 50 metres in length and 25 metres in width with a depth of 5.2 metres at the far end and 1.4 metres at the other end. The pool comprises of 10 swimming lanes.

     

    The facility could also be utilized for a range of aquatic sports including competitive swimming, water polo, diving and lifesaving training.

     

    It has been equipped with administration control booths, illegal substance testing area, VIP enclosure, first-aid stations, auditorium and accommodation facility for athletes. It is also capable of accumulating over 1000 spectators at a time.

     

    The entire construction was carried out under the purview of the Directorate of Civil Engineering of the Sri Lanka Air Force while obtaining the technical expertise from the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) and the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.

     

    The Rs 162 million facility would directly assist in improving swimming and aquatic sports among Air-Force personnel. The SLAF has produced a number of outstanding sportsmen and women in the aquatic field including national record holder of the 50 metre free style in 2011. The women's water polo team had won the National championship in five occasions.

     

    Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr BMUD Basnayake, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinhala, senior SLAF officers and other ranks were also present at the occasion.
