Smuggling carrots into Parliament indicates lapses of security

    October 27, 2014

Smuggling of two carrots into the Chamber of Parliament complex by UNP Kurunegala District MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha indicated that there was a lapse of security arrangements, Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake said in Parliament today.

MP Jayamaha participating in the second reading stage debate on budget 2015 took out two carrots from his bag and displayed to the House saying that government had brought in a ‘carrot-budget.’

Deputy Minister Dissanayake bringing this to the notice of the Chair said the Opposition MPs who smuggled in carrots could even bring in a bomb inside the Chamber and demanded that severe action be taken against this security threat.

Presiding Member Janaka Bandara ordered the Serjeant-At-Arms to remove the carrots from the Chamber and to investigate how carrots had been smuggled in. He also ordered the latter to report to the Speaker the results of investigation.

Serjeant-at-arms came to MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha’s desk and took the two carrots away.  (Special Reporter/HC)
