The Minister of Postal Services Jeevan Kumaratunga presented the new postage stamp and the first day cover issued to mark the event to President Mahinda Rajapaksa. A memento too was presented to the President appreciating the programmes carried out by the President betterment and upliftment of the postal sector in our country,
Postal Services Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga, Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya, Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, Post Master General Rohana Abeyrathna, Director General of Universal Postal Union International Bureau Bishar Hussein and Director of APPU Int'l Bureau Lin Hongliang were present at the inaugural session.
The ECM will be held until Sep. 19. Sri Lanka had been benefiting from APPU since 1970; hundreds of Postal Department employees had undergone training in the Asian Pacific Postal College (APPC). By assuming the Chairmanship of APPU in 2014, Sri Lanka could derive more benefits for the development of the postal sector.
About 150 foreign representatives including the Director General of the Universal Postal Union participated in the ECM. (ST/KH)
