    President emphasizes the need of further strengthening the Parliament Featured

    President Maithripala Sirisena says the objective of the Government is to further strengthen Parliament through a constitution, which strengthen the rights of all the citizens in an undivided unitary state.

     

    He made these remarks addressing a special sitting of Parliament to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Parliamentary Democracy in Sri Lanka, yesterday (3rd Oct.).

     

    The President emphasized the need of further strengthening of the Parliament and said that the assistance of all the political parties representing the Supreme Parliament is expected in this regard.

     

    The President invited all to commit themselves in bringing economic prosperity to the country, while following a political agenda which deviates the power centered on one person to a collective power.

     

    President Sirisena also noted the need of working in a manner which will not create a conflict between the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary, and he further said that the constitutional power received by the Parliament as the supreme authority of the country, should need to continue in a way which will not challenge to anyone as well as the Executive should ensure the supremacy of the rule of law while strengthening the democracy, human rights and fundamental rights.

     

    In the process of ensuring the supremacy of the rule of law, the right to act independently and impartially of the judiciary should be ensured, the President added.

     

    The President also recalled with great respect all the political leaders who rendered a great service during this 70 year long prestigious parliamentary history.

     

    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan also addressed the gathering and local and foreign distinguished guests, including Speakers and Deputy Speakers of Parliaments of SAARC countries participated on this occasion.
