Issues on teacher appointments affect education – PM Featured

    May 19, 2017

The biggest problem faced by the education sector of the country is the influence of various reasons such as politics, other connections, and the race or religion, in appointing teachers to government schools, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

He was speaking at the 75th anniversary celebration of St. Thomas' College, Bandarawela yesterday (18th May).

According to him, he has already discussed with the President and the Education Minister regarding setting up a proper program for the recruitment of teachers to government schools and to review the progress of it. The new system should introduce to the schools under the government, central government, and Provincial Councils.

A special knowledge is needed to develop education. During the last two decades, there were issues in the education system of the country. We would form a National Education Policy, which does not take over the powers of the Provincial Councils nor give over the powers of the central government.

He said it is essential to give two to three days of leave per a year for the teachers to get new knowledge and it should be implemented within the next five to six years.
