    May 11, 2021

In order to make a better society, the current government has focused on stopping the importation of narcotics, reducing the demand for narcotics and rehabilitating drug addicts.

A discussion prioritizing the above has been held with the presence of Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera, State Minister of Community Police Services Dilum Amunugama, and many other officials related to this field.

While various measures have already been taken to reduce the demand for narcotics and minimize the importation of drugs, the main focus of this discussion was on rehabilitating drug addicts without imprisonment, providing them with vocational training, and reconnecting them with society as effective citizens.

During this discussion, a project plan in this regard was presented and it was suggested that the project plan should be implemented under those who should be imprisoned, socialized and rehabilitated. It also highlighted the necessity of vocational training, socialization, and follow-up on these individuals.

A committee was appointed for the execution of this plan and the committee members include representatives of the relevant Ministries, Departments and various agencies.

Furthermore, the need to classify drug addicts as long-term addicts and short-term addicts, and to protect the identities of those involved were highlighted.

Provision of counseling services via online was also highlighted.
