    Series of programmes in parallel to National Environment Week Featured

    President Maithripala Sirisena planted a “Kiripalu plant” at the premises of President’s House as a part of the National Environment Week today,stated the President's Media Division. The government declared the week starting from May 30, as the National Environmental Week, keeping in line with the World Environment Day which falls on June 5.

    May 30 was declared as the day on clean environment and raising awareness on environment, May 31 as the day on minimizing air pollution, June 1 as the day on tree planting and June 2 as the day on water conservation. June 3 is themed on Biodiversity conservation and June 4 is themed on sustainable land management. Programs highlighting each theme are organized across the country.

    World Environment Day 2019 will be hosted under the theme of "Air Pollution". Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific. World Environment Day 2019 will urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world.
