    Fines for traffic rule violations to be increased

    The fines for violating traffic rules will be increased to reduce the number of road accidents. The minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala De Silva’s proposal to increase the fines was approved by the cabinet of ministers yesterday.

    Accordingly, the minimum fine will be Rs 25,000 for driving a vehicle without a license,employing people without a license, driving after alcohol consumption,violating railway crossing rules  and driving a vehicle without a valid insurance, said Co  cabinet spokesman Minister Gayantha Karunatilleke today (10th Aug.) at the Cabinet press briefing held at the Parliament.

     

    In addition the fines for driving at high speed,overtaking from the left, reckless driving, and minors taking to the wheel has been increased to a minimum of Rs 2,500.
