Highways, Ports and Shipping Project Minister Nirmala Kothalawala said that these four projects have been initiated on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Minister Kothalawala said: "There is unprecedented development in the country's road infrastructure sector today which is a fact accepted by all despite party differences. Not only urban roads, but roads in the rural sector have been developed and carpeted. The road networks in all provinces have been developed."
The stretch of road from Ayagama to Agalgama in the Ratnapura district will be developed at a cost of Rs. 3,880 million.
The total length of the road is 23 km. The 27.5 km road from Ratnapura to Wewalwatte will be developed at a cost of Rs. 4,536 million. The development work of the Ratnapura-Karavita road via Palawela will also commence at a cost of Rs. 4,262 million.
The road from Thalgodapitiya to Yatawatta via Dombawela connecting the Matale and Kurunegala districts will be renovated at a cost of Rs.3,197 million. The total length of the road is 26.8 km.
"The benefits of these projects are for the people. Road development began in 2004 under President Mahinda Rajapaksa's guidance and three expressways, including the Southern Expressway, Colombo- Katunayake Expressway and Outer Circular Highway have already been commissioned," the project minister said.
