    Relics recovered from Neelagiri Seya legally vested in the Mahamewuna Monastery

    Director General of Archaeology Dr. Senarath Dissanayake has said that the relics recovered from the Neelagiri Seya was legally handed over to the Mahamewuna Monastery. Various reports had been published in the media that the Buddha relics which were recovered from Neelagiri Seya had been handed over to the Mahamewuna Monastery sans any endorsement.

    Following queries raised about the issue, Director General of Archaeology Dr. Senarath Dissanayake mentioned that the Department of Archaeology possesses all related documents with regard to the vesting of the Relics in the Monastery.

     

    The Archaeological Advisory Council took a decision to deposits part of the relics in the Neelagiri Seya and to distribute some parts among the Vihares and also to keep parts of the Relics with the Department to be provided when requests are being made.

     

    It is according to this decision that the Relics have been vested with Monastery. It is a tradition which had so far been adhered to in the country. He mentioned that his Department possesses all the documents to prove it. He refuted incorrect and unfounded reports published in the media.
