    Secretary Defence Graces 'National Civilian Bravery Awards Ceremony-2015'

    Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. BMUD Basnayake graced the 21st National Bravery Awarding Ceremony organized by the 'Foundation for Civilian Bravery Sri Lanka' at the Defence Service College Auditorium, Colombo yesterday (11th June).

    'Foundation for Civilian Bravery' rewards daring and courageous individuals those who have astounded the island with their unmatched valour, by saving others.

     

    Accordingly, Medals and Certificates of Commendation were presented to the awardees with-a-view to felicitate the outstanding acts of bravery while risking their lives to save others during the year 2013 and 2014.

     

    Speaking at the event Secretary recalled that, Sri Lanka is a renowned country which has a rich cultural diversity. The culture itself is very unique and thereby well-known for hospitality which date back to over 2000 years which had been descending from generation to generation, he added.

     

    He also stated that, most prominent feature of hospitality combined with inborn eagerness and willingness to help those who are in jeopardy has formed a unique culture here in Sri Lanka.

     

    Further he elaborated that, religious state-of-mind of populace is another fact behind such good behaviour. The contribution of every religion has cultured them to be more sensitive in situations and has persuaded people to extend their helping hands involuntarily to others, he said.

     

    He also went on to say that, social trends in other countries show that people prefer to be highly isolated behind their inbuilt personal environment. They are also unaware concerning the state-of-affairs of their fellow citizens, he explained.

     

    From that point-of-view we are dissimilar comparatively to the other nations in the world. It is truly a good trend that which could be used for the betterment of the country, Secretary also noted.

     

    Further speaking he expressed that, felicitations for heroic deeds without any racial discrimination would involuntarily constructs reconciliation among populace. This far-sighted initiative would indirectly contribute to the betterment of the entire nation, he also added.

     

    Budalna Gold Medal, Civilian Bravery Silver Medal, Civilian Bravery Students Gold Star, Civilian Bravery Students Silver Star, Civilian Bravery Philanthropy Award, Civilian Bravery Fauna Flora Award, Civilian Bravery Award of Appreciation and Civilian Bravery Students Innovation to Improve Life Safety are the 8 medals that are currently awarding by the foundation.

     

    The 'Official Web Site' of the 'Foundation for Civilian Bravery' was also launched by the Secretary Defence at a function held at the Lighthouse Galley, Colombo recently.

     

    Religious Dignitaries, Guest of Honour the Secretary to the New South Wales Royal Humane Society Mr. Rolland Millbank, High Commissioner to the Australian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Defence Ministry Officials, Tri-Forces Officers, medal recipients and their family members were present at the ceremony.
