CMC begins survey on stray dogs

    June 01, 2015

A survey on stray dogs has been commenced within the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

The survey commenced last week and so far several field walks had been completed by the officers.

The aim of the survey was to ascertain the number of stray dogs within the city. The officers engaged in the survey begin work at around 6.00 a.m. as many stray dogs are found on streets during early hours of the day.

It is expected that the survey would help carry out rabies control programmes within the city more effectively. CMC do not seize the stray dogs now. Time to time we catch them and release back to the places they were seized after birth control operations and vaccination against rabies.

In addition to the stray dogs, the registered dog population within the city amounts to about 8,500. House to House vaccination programmes are conducted by the CMC Veterinary Department for registered dogs.
