MR pledged to go to Electric chair, but why not to BC Featured

    April 22, 2015

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who pledged to go to the electric chair is now making a big hue and cry about having to go before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera said wile addressing a press conference held at the Government Information Department today.(22).

He pointed out that, officials of the CIABOC have been instructed to visit the former President at his residence instead of summoning him to obtain a statement on appointing former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, and I do not think it is a problem for him to give a statement, he said. All are equal before the law even the President or ordinary person.

"There are those who said that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa should not have been called before the Commission at this time, but, President Mathripala Sirisena or Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would not interfere with the work of the CIABOC," he said.

"If we do so, that is not good governance. This country is not used to taking action against the powerful people, irrespective of their positions and it was not a practice known to us so far investigating into allegations against powerful persons.

He further said it is part of good governance that institutions such as CIABOC and the Police functions without political interference.

"These institutions should be independent under good governance and that it is why we will bring 19th Amendment before the House," he said.
