The government under the 100 days program assured to implement measures to provide land rights and the ownership of a legal residence to the employees of tea estates, who are presently living in line rooms under poorest conditions in the country.
Accordingly, in accordance with the agreement reached by all relevant parties and in order to implement the identified steps in this connection, the government has decided to provide each of them a plot of land to the extent of 7 perches. The estate employees will also be provided with a legal document that would be accepted by any bank.
The government will reacquire the houses, which were constructed by various organizations and provided to the beneficiaries and subsequently entrusted to third parties illegally, without any compensation payment and entrust them to the Plantation Cooperative Societies.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal made by the Minister of Plantation Industry Lakshman Kiriella to implement the necessary measures.
