Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said yesterday that the Police have gathered sufficient evidence to institute legal action against her. He added that the investigation carried out by the CID has unearthed sufficient evidence to charge her for possessing fake documents and for her disclosures at the Immigration and Emigration Department to obtain a passport, on the basis of fraudulent documents.
The offense is punishable under the Sri Lankan Penal Code and shashi Weerawansa who is under arrest now, will be interrogated and produced before Courts, the Police Spokesman said.
According to the Police Spokesman, no officer from the CID had visited the residence of former Minister Weerawansa to question his wife nor visited their party office.
“Responding to a question as to why she was not arrested on an earlier occasion and interrogated on the allegations that she had used two passports bearing different National Identity Card numbers, birth dates and dissimilar names, SSP Rohana said, “If the police had arrested her without determining how the fraudulent documents came into being to be present at the Passport control, then the interrogation procedure would be rather poor.
Accordingly, SSP Rohana explained that the Police took time to gather the necessary evidence so that Police can successfully interrogate the suspect. "We did not want anything to slip through our hands,” he added.
