Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera together with anti corruption expert and senior lawyer J.C. Weliamuna who are presently in the United States will meet officials of the World Bank’s Stolen Asset Recovery Unit in the US capital to obtain their assistance with the investigations to hunt for plundered wealth by certain politicians during the former regime, particularly in foreign banks.
According to Deputy foreign Minister and UNP Chief Organizer for the Bandaragama electorate, Ajith P. Perera, the anti corruption arm of the World Bank - StAR will help Sri Lanka to conduct investigations into the top people who were allegedly involved in corruption in the country".
The World Bank’s Stolen Assets Recovery Unit (StAR) is an initiative of the World Bank Group and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It supports international efforts to end safe havens for corrupt funds. StAR works with developing countries and financial centres to prevent the laundering of the proceeds of corruption and to facilitate the return of stolen assets.
