Jayantha Dhanapala to meet UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

    January 26, 2015

Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Sri Lanka President's Senior Adviser on Foreign Relations has left for Geneva Sunday (25) to meet the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein.

Dhanapala as special envoy of President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to discuss the UN Human Rights Council's investigation into alleged serious violations of human rights by both parties in Sri Lanka with the High Commissioner. The former UN Under Secretary General is expected to brief the High Commissioner on the progress Sri Lanka has made in addressing the human rights violations after the 28th session of UNHRC in March 2014.

The previous government of Mahinda Rajapaksa has consistently refused to cooperate with the UN inquiry or grant visas to UN investigators to collect evidence for the investigation.
