The Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, a unique national heritage that represents the identity of Theravada Buddhism to the entire world, is not only the crowning jewel of the Buddhist population in Sri Lanka but also a revered and venerated sacred relic that commands immense respect from people across the globe.
Since the 4th century, successive rulers of this land have safeguarded the Sacred Tooth Relic even amidst great challenges, and even today, it continues to be honored and protected with utmost reverence, in accordance with the guidance and instructions of the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiri Ubhaya Buddhist monastery, as a symbol of national pride for all Sri Lankans.
After 16 years of lengthy period of time, the rare and meritorious opportunity to witness and pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic which is regarded as the equivalent to the living presence of Gautama Lord Buddha has been granted once again to all citizens, marking a fortunate and auspicious moment for both Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike.
