There are two million 800 thousand inhabitants in Asuncion, while nationwide has nearly seven million, according to data from 2013, which turns the great Asuncion, in its 902 square kilometers, into one of the 20 South America's largest urban agglomerations.
But the urban area hardly reach 758 thousand people in an area of 117 km2, which gives a density of six thousand 478 per 2km.
Located next to a bay, on the left bank of the Paraguay River, in front of the confluence with the Pilcomayo, it is subdivided into six districts with 70 neighbourhoods.
On March 20, 2012, the World Organization for Peace declared Asuncion World Capital of Friendship For Peace.
A police and military parade in the Costanera Avenue, attended by the President of the Republic, Horacio Cartes, opened the celebrations on Friday.
