Bangladesh Running Out of Natural Gas

    June 30, 2015

Dhaka:  Should the current rate of extraction continue, the natural gas reserves of Bangladesh will run out in 2031, which would endanger the energy security of the nation, as revealed yesterday by an official source.

Quoted by the national press, Nasrul Hamid, Minister of Electricity, Energy, and Mineral Resources, precised that at present, the reserve of this country amounts to 14,160 million cubic feet of gas.

Hamid manifested that 20 fields are currently under exploitation, while another six are being prospected. The situation forced the authorities to shorten the supply to households to prioritize the industrial sector, Prensa Latina News Agency reported.

In oder to counteract the deficit, Petrobangla, the state oil and gas company, gave priority to the exploration and search for reserves of both fuels in the Bay of Bengal and the reassessment of old fields to attempt further extraction with newer technologies.
