Presidents Rousseff and Obama To Meet at White House

    June 21, 2015

Washington: The Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, and her US counterpart Barack Obama will meet at the White House on June 30 to reactivate links, said the Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, Roberta Jacobson.

It will be the start of a new phase in the links between the two nations, which have been put to the test in the past 18 months, added Jacobson, referring to the diplomatic conflict triggered in 2013 in the wake of revelations that the US intelligence had tapped Rousseff's communications.

The scandal cause the postponement of a visit to the United States scheduled for October, 2013.

According to Jacobson, since then the two governments have made significant efforts to mend the relations, though she admitted that the public opinion still feel there are issues between the two top leaders.

Rousseff and Obama are also expected to discuss regional and global issues, including the cooperation in backing the elections scheduled for this year in Haiti, where Brazil is conducting the UN military mission (Minustah).
