    Qatar Emir Proposes Anti Corruption Item to UN

    Doha: The Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al -Thani, has proposed to set a separate item related to fight corruption and establishing the rule of law as a goal within the proposed new millennium and goals on the agenda of the United Nations summit to adopt a development plan for after 2015.

    Government circles in Doha said the Emir's written message was sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, calling for this issue to be an independent goal as part of the UN summit set goals to highlight the actions taken to fight corruption and application of the United Nations related mechanisms in dealing with the reduction of this phenomenon.

     

    This came to reflect the Emir's keenness on supporting the fight against corruption as well as supporting the rule of law and promoting transparency at various levels in order to contribute effectively to the achievement of sustainable development goals, including the Millennium Goals.

     

    Al-Thani's message was handed over by Qatar's Attorney General Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, who is also the UN Special Advocate for fight against corruption, in a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in New York on Thursday.

     

    Since 2005, the State of Qatar has been leading a large international efforts in the promotion of the rule of law and the fight against corruption, where it had hosted the World Summit of Attorneys General and organized the Third Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the fight against corruption, where the countries had adopted the Doha mechanism which ruled that States should review each other in the implementation of the Convention.

     

    In collaboration with the United Nations, Qatar has established the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption Centre, at the regional and international levels.

     

    A similar centre was also set up in Dakar, Senegal, to support the efforts of African countries in this area.
