The Chief Guest of the event Consulate General of India in Jaffna, Mr. A. Natarajan laid floral tributes during the ceremony. General Officer Commanding 51 Division Brigadier S. K. Thirunaukarisu and the Defence Advisor of Indian High Commission in Colombo Captain Prakash Gopalan also laid floral tributes to the cenotaph.
A brief introduction of the bygone era was followed a two-minute silence during the session in honour of fallen heroes.
During Operation Pawan conducted by the IPKF, LTTE terrorists opened an indiscriminate fire at them (soldiers of the 10 Indian Para Regiment) in the midnight 12 October 1987 amidst their heli - landing to Jaffna University premises, the Tactical Headquarters of the LTTE, blatantly violating the Geneva Convention passed in 1949.
The IPKF memorial, Palaly remembers 33 Indian soldiers including Lieutenant Colonel Arun Kumar Chhabra who laid their lives for sake of the territorial integrity of their friendly neighbouring country.
