Activist moves SC against Jayalalithaa acquittal

    May 20, 2015

A special leave petition was filed on Tuesday in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her co-accused by the Karnataka High Court in the disproportionate assets case.

The petition has been filed by Chennai-based activist K.R. Ramaswamy aka ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy in the apex court. Mr. Ramaswamy was neither intervenor nor party in litigation concerning this wealth case.

In fact, the Karnataka government is yet to move the Supreme Court in appeal. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, an intervenor, or DMK leader K. Anbazhagan, who had challenged former Special Public Prosecutor Bhavani Singh’s role in the appeals before the High Court, are also yet to move the Supreme Court against the acquittal.

The petition filed on Tuesday evening through Mr. Ramaswamy’s lawyer, N. Raja Raman, has been allotted a diary number, according to lawyers associated with it. The apex court registry would now go through the petition for defects.
