    Earthquake hits lightly populated, mountainous area, killing at least 4, injuring 54

    A strong earthquake that hit a sparsely populated, mountainous area of western China killed at least four people and injured 54 others. China’s seismological agency put the magnitude at 6.3. The four dead included a woman in her 70s who was struck by a falling window pane. A stampede at a primary school in Tagong town during the quake injured 42 children. A total of 30 homes collapsed and 2,630 suffered serious damage.

    At the same time, the magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck west of Nagano city at a depth of 10 kilometres. Meteorological Agency revised the magnitude from a preliminary 6.8. At least 37 homes were destroyed in two villages, and 39 people were injured across the region, including seven seriously, mostly with broken bones. Non-residential buildings were also destroyed, with officials still assessing the extent. About 200 people have evacuated to shelters, almost all from Hakuba and Otari.
