    Fire at carrot-packaging factory in China leaves at least 18 dead

    A fire in a carrot-packaging plant has killed at least 18 people in eastern China. Another 13 people were injured in the fire in the Longyuan Food Company facility in the city of Shouguang. State broadcaster showed footage of excavators cleaning up the rubble at the site, while rescue teams could also be seen working at nighttime. It said that more than one hundred workers were employed in the carrot-processing factory.
     
    Meanwhile, a suicide bomber attacked a prominent female member of Afghanistan’s parliament killing three people and wounding the lawmaker. Shukria Barakzai was slightly wounded in the attack on her vehicle as she was heading to parliament.
     
    Another three people, including a young girl, were killed. The attacker was in a car that attempted to ram Barakzai’s vehicle. The assailant then detonated explosives, causing a massive blast that was heard across the capital.(ST/KH)
