    November 15, 2014

Jakarta: Heavy rains have caused severe floods in South Pesisir District, in the Indonesian State of Sumatra, where more than 800 houses remain under water today.

The Regional Disaster Management Board's Head of Emergency and Logistics, Medi Yuherman, told Antara News that villagers from Sungai Sirah, Sungai Serik, Sungai Pulai, Talang Binjai, Pasir Binjai, and Air Hitam, are at risk of flash floods.

The official urged Indonesians to seek shelter in secure locations and stay away from the mountains. He also said officials were immediately deployed to assist flood victims and are distributing food aid packages comprising rice, instant noodles, and cooking oil.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho confirmed the floods would remain for at least another day and stressed the need to comply with all security measures.(KH)
