Greater demand for Fresh Water Fish

    June 30, 2014

At a meeting held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to discuss the progress of the fresh fish industry in Sri Lanka, Minister Dr.Rajitha Senarathna said that there is a greater demand for fresh water fish as sea fishing gets more and more expensive due to fuel and the maintenance cost of fishing vessels.

The Minister further said that the best example for aquaculture and  fresh water fishing industry was the Ampara district.  The entrepreneurs and their societies are very enthusiastic.  They maintain correct records using computers, he said. Not only are their management strategies of a high standard, they also conduct welfare activities towards their members.  The income of the farmers is noteworthy and praise is due to the dedication of the officers in charge of these projects in the Ampara district, added Minister Senarathna.

Worldwide 90% of the fresh water fish industry is conducted in Asia.  Therefore Sri Lanka has a very good future in the industry.

Deputy Minister Sarath Kumara Gunarathna, Ministry Secretary Dr.D.M.R.B. Dissanayake, National Aquaculture Development Authority Chairman Jayantha Chandrasoma, Chairman of Nara Institute Dr.Sayuru Samarasundara participated at the discussion.(KH/SI)
