Chile's Atacama Desert becomes floral wonderland

    October 29, 2015
Chile's Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth.

But parts of the usually arid landscape are currently covered in a multitude of flowers, following massive downpours earlier in the year linked to this year's "Godzilla El Nino".

Flash flooding in the country's north region earlier this yearkilled 25 people and left thousands homeless. But parts of the usually arid landscape are currently covered in a multitude of flowers, following massive downpours earlier in the year linked to this year's "Godzilla El Nino".

The floral phenomenon — where dormant seeds bloom in spring after high rainfall events — is known as desierto florido, or flowering desert.

The spectacle will not last for much longer as the landscape is expected to return to normal from November.
