All of the eight swimmers returned personal best performances in at least one of their main events placing confidence on the future of local swimming standards. Three swimmers Kyle Abeysinghe, Dilrukshi Perera and Hiruni Perera achieved personal bests in all of the events they swam.
The highlight of the performances was the establishment of a new national record by Hiruni Perera of Harischandra College, Negombo stamping the entrance of a new name to the record books. Hiruni completed the 50m Butterfly in a time of 30.09 seconds erasing the previous mark of 30.44 seconds set by Kimiko Raheem who was also at the competition focusing on a different set of events. “This was the first major international championships for majority of these swimmers and we couldn’t expect anything more than their personal best.
The team comprised four boys and four girls namely Kyle Abeysinghe, Imesh Chathuranga, Dineth Jayakody, Akalanka Pieris, Chamodi De Fonseka, Dilrukshi Perera. Hiruni Perera and Kimiko Raheem.
The team was coordinated by Manoj Abeysinghe (Head Coach), Sineth Akila (Assistant Coach) of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union team and Marianne Jongsma on behalf of the FINA Scholarship Programme swimmers from the Thanyapura Training Centre in Thailand.
