    October 04, 2014

Sri Lanka’s new U19 contingent who took the rains for battling in the last two games of the five-match series made all concerned forget the loss they suffered yesterday with a much improved performance today (04) to win the most important match of the series concluded this afternoon at the SSC sealing an dramatic 3-1 series win in their favour.

Shammu Ashan breaking two good partnerships at a time the Aussies were blossoming very fast helped Sri Lanka U19 to reduce their counterparts to a total of 203 all out in 49.3 overs after Aussies opted to bat first after winning the toss. Shammu first removed Patrick McKenna who added 51 runs for the fifth wicket carrying Aussies total from woeful 41 for four to a respectable 92 for five in the 25 over and then again he came to the rescue of his side breaking the 8 wicket stand of 67 that was developing alarmingly between Izaac Boylan and Jonte Pattison before he cleaned up Boylan for a 39-ball 37 at the score of 183. Aussies middle order getting runs after their top order wobbled reached 203 all out with Jonte Pattison top scoring with a 52-ball 40 while Patrick McKenna and Izaac Boylan made 34 each. Shammu Ashan and Damith Silva shared 5 wickets between them conceding just 67 runs in 17 overs. All Sri Lankan bowlers did their part by maintaining an average economy of 4.1 runs per over.

Sri Lanka chasing this modest total lost Rashmika Opataha early for a run-a-ball 14, but the flourishing partnership of 147 runs in 29 overs between Kaveen Bandara and Akeel Inham for the second wicket surged Sri Lanka U19 to a glorious 8-wicket victory with staggering 11.5 overs to spare in the 5 and last youth one-dayer. Kaveen Bandara scored a fluent 86 off 114 balls with 10 fours while Akeel Inham almost run-a-ball unbeaten 83 from 89 balls with 11 fours and a six.
