Sri Lanka also marked winning two track events by clean sweeping them for gold, silver and bronze. This is first time in Sri Lanka’s sports history that so many medals were won at a Games conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
The men’s athletics team snatched all three medals in the 200MT42 event with Amila Prasanna producing a stunning gold medal when he recorded 26.01seconds in the event while his fellow military men Upul Indika Jinadasa clocked 26.08 seconds to secure silver and Charith Nirmala Buddhika finishing in 26.59 seconds to grab bronze.
The second clean sweep happened in the much expected 100M T42,63 event when Amila Prasanna won the gold medal by clocking 12.56 seconds and Indika Jinadasa took silver with 12.87seconds while Keerthi Bandara (2.92 seconds) won the bronze.Charitha Nirmala Buddika won the third gold for Sri Lanka in the Men’s Long Jump T42/T61/T63 with a leap of 5.37 metres.
Sri Lanka Para team captain Dinesh Herath bagged the fourth gold for Sri Lanka when he won the F46 Javelin event with a throw of 61.84 meters. In a competition of remarkable quality, Dinesh Herath defeated world record holder D. Devendra who reached 59.17 metres for fourth place in the competition’s final dramatic moments.Amara Indumathi and Chaminda Sampath Hettiarachchi, also from the army, won silver medals.
Indumathi won in the T45-46, 47 long jump recording 4.62 metres and Hettiarachchi won the silver in the Javelin recording 59.32 metres.Palitha Bandara won the silver in the F42/61/63 Shott Putt event recording his personnel best of 13.21 metres.Nuwan Indika Gamage won a silver medal for Sri Lanka in the Men’s Long Jump T44, T62/64 while Lal Pushpakumara won the bronze in Men’s High Jump T64/44 category with 1.76 metres.
