    Coastal Clean-up Day celebrations begins under President's participation Featured

    The national ceremony to mark International Coastal Clean-up Day which falls on the 3rd Saturday of September, was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena today (Sep. 19) at the Galle Face Beach.

    Coastal Cleanup Day is dedicated to the improvement of beaches, coastal regions and surrounding areas throughout the world. It purports to be the largest volunteer event in the world, and has operated for over 26 years.

     

    The national program was held under the theme ‘A super Beach for Sri Lanka’.

     

    According to oceanic region law, the area of 1700kms around Sri Lanka has been named as the Coastal Pollution Prevention Zone. Therefore, the International Coastal Clean-up Day is significant for Sri Lanka.

     

    President Maithripala Sirisena stated that the ocean is momentous for the humans and every living being. He added it is a national responsibility of everybody to keep the coast clean.

     

    Venerable Maha Sanga, other religious leaders, Minister PataliChampikaRanawaka, Chief Minister of Western Province IsuruDewapriya, Secretary to the President P. B. Abeykoon, Chairman of the MarineEnvironment ProtectionAuthorityRanjithMigaswatte, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Udaya R. Seneviratne also participated in this event.
