He was addressing the maiden sessions of the Eighth Parliament after his election as the Speaker.
While thanking for unanimously approving his name as the Speaker, he urged the support of all members to build a consensual Parliament that could provide an example for future generations of the country.
Jayasuriya vowed to maintain the confidence placed upon him and to be impartial in his future undertakings as the Speaker. He advised all MPs to actively participate in Parliamentary Committee and Parliament debates to reap the maximum use of their parliamentary seat.
He also emphasised the need to uphold the independence and democracy in Parliament while adhering to Standing Orders.
The Speaker also stressed the need to confront national issues unitedly while finding the unitary character within diversity.
