The motion was defeated by a majority of 94 votes with 151 members voting against the motion and only 57 members voting for the motion.
The UNP, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Democratic National Alliance voted in support of the motion while government coalition parties, Jathika Hela Urumaya and National Freedom Front were absent.
The UNP presented the no confidence motion in parliament highlighting the government's inability to curb drug trafficking in the country.
