    Government will protect and uphold Buddhist values - President Featured

    The government will work determinedly to protect and uphold Buddhist values to mould people's lives in accordance with the Buddhist principles and teachings, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

    He also said protecting moral values along with technological and the economic development could be made only through Buddhist philosophy.

     

    President Sirisena made this observation on Monday (04) at the State Vesak Festival held at the historic Mahiyangana Rajamaha Viharaya.

     

    He also said that the government will take steps to protect Buddhism in the country by implementing a national and international programme under the guidance and instructions of the Chief Prelates of the three Chapters to impart a comprehensive knowledge of Buddhism on the people, especially the younger generation.

     

    President Sirisena also pointed out the need to strengthen Daham School education in order to expand and improve the knowledge of youth on Buddhism.

     

    The State Vesak festival was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe at the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara yesterday.

     

    A special stamp of the denomination of ten rupees was issued.

    The president also presented financial aid for Dhamma Schools and funds for the Wellbeing of parents of eight bikkus in the area under the 'Buduputh Mapiya' felicitation housing programme. A cash donation was presented to Ven.Adaulpatha Buddhasara Thero who survived during the Aranthalawa Massacre of Buddhist Monks and is in a disabled condition.

    Several parliamentarians including Minister of Buddha Shasana Karu Jayasuriya participated in the ceremony.
