    PM briefs Parliament on Govt's assistance to Nepal

    Sri Lanka was among the  countries that pledged immediate assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake in Nepal. said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe in Parliament today (27).  He appealed to the Sri Lankans to extend their support for this cause.


    He said that emergency rescue and relief contingent of Army personnelwere sent for the earthquake-struck Nepal and he is reporting to the Parliament as it is a custom to keep the Parliament informed.


    The Prime Minister said that Sri Lanka and Nepal share certain things in common and one of the significant feature is the relationship between the two countries as a centre of Theravada Buddhism.


    The Prime Minister said that after a discussion with the President, a Special Committee has been appointed  to assist with the relief efforts for the victims of the Nepal earthquake.  


    Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also said that President Sirisena has decided to offer whatever help was possible to alleviate the suffering of those affected.


    He further rpointed out that arrangements have been made to bring back Sri Lankans including students currently in Nepal through the Nepal Embassy


    The Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva expressing his views said that he is proud of the work carried out by the Sri Lankan Government in this regard.
