Plan to bring local universities up in world rankings

    August 22, 2014

Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake said in Parliament that the government was moving ahead with a plan to bring local universities up in international rankings.

Responding to a question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake on Thursday (21), the minister said according to Webometrics international ranking results released on July this year, University of Colombo achieved the world rank 2146, while universities of Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Sri Jayewardenepura and Jaffna achieved the positions of 2479, 2497, 3091 and 7225 respectively.

The University of Colombo had been ranked at positions 2,240 in July 2011, 1,685 in July 2012, and 2,255 in 2013 among the list of universities in the world. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura had been ranked at positions 5,330 in July 2010, 6,382 in July 2011, 2,758 in July 2012 and 5,969 in July 2013 while the University of Peradeniya was at 2,973 in 2013. The University of Jaffna had been ranked at positions 9,309 in July 2010, 9,406 in July 2011, 5,662 in July 2012 and 8,163 in July 2013.

Minister Dissanayake said that action had been set in motion by the ministry to get local universities ascend in international rankings. The first private medical college in the country was set up a UNP government, the minister said adding, that later it had been taken over to the government.

“We must support the setting up of private medical colleges. There are 51 branches of foreign universities in Sri Lanka. Setting up private universities which offer quality degrees would help prevent students going abroad for higher education and thereby contribute to save foreign exchange,” the minister added.
