Sri Lanka, being one of the countries which have ensured the right to information of the public, possesses the third best Right to Information Act in the world.Accordingly, the Government has focused its attention to declare the period from 21st to 28th September as the Information Week to make aware the public of using the right to information for the public welfare to coincide with the International Day of Right to Information which falls on 28th September while naming the year 2018 as 'Year of Public Awareness'.
As such, the proposal made by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Finance and Mass Media, to implement the mobile service on Right to Information as 'Right to Information to the Village' under this programme and to make aware the students of the same by conducting various competitions covering all schools Island wide, was approved by the Cabinet.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
News.lk publishes in three languages – Sinhala, Tamil and English.
