    Traders of Consumer goods should recognize their human responsibility – President

    President Maithripala Sirisena says all institutions that trade in consumer goods including food should act with an understanding of their human responsibilities rather than merely depending on the government regulations and laws to govern them.


    “The standard of the consumer goods is the main measuring scale of the development of a country. Even today the kitchens of some restaurants island wide including Colombo do not have the required quality standards and cleanliness”, he pointed out.


    The President was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the seminar organized under the theme of ‘Consumer Rights of Digital Era’ held yesterday (15th March ) at the NelumPokuna auditorium.


    The seminar was held to mark the World Consumer Rights Day which fell yesterday.


    The seminar aimed at creating new policies to protect the rights of the digital consumers and solve their issues in Sri Lanka.


    “Though we are aligned with the new technology with its development, most of the times the technology is used for the activities that lead to deterioration of the human society. It is the responsibility of the intellectuals to ensure that the modern technology is used for the betterment of the people. The modern technology should be used for protecting the consumers”, the president further stated.


    Consumers International’s Regional Project Officer for Asia and Pacific Satya Sharma delivered the keynote address on the subject, ‘regional and global consumer trends and developments in the digital age’.


    President lighted the oil lamp, using digital technology.


    The President launched the program to encourage the consumers to work closely with the Consumer Affairs Authority.


    He also presented the gifts to the winners of the short documentary films, organized by the Consumer Affairs Authority.
