    Initial steps for pensions to migrant workers would be taken shortly – President

    President Maithripala Sirisena assured to commence initial work to provide a pension to the Sri Lankan migrant workers within next few months for their future social security.



    “This has been an issue taken into discussion for a long period. The current government will implement that program by fulfilling the promises given to the people on the platform of the Presidential Election as well as in the election manifesto”, he said.



    The President made these remarks at the national ceremony to grant scholarships to the children of the migrant parents, held yesterday (Dec. 08) at the Temple Trees. The Development Officers of the Divisional Secretariats were presented computers on this occasion.



    The President stated that the government is paying much attention on the migrant workers who contribute the national economy by earning foreign exchange. “The government is committed for the welfare of their families”, he stated.



    This scholarship program has been implemented for the children of the migrant workers who are registered in Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau. The children who pass the Grade 5 Scholarship, G. C. E. (O/L) and G. C. E. (A/L) are provided with these scholarships.



    Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorala, Deputy Minister Manusha Nanayakkara and the Chairman of the Foreign Employment Bureau R. K. Obesekara also participated.
