“I have many responsibilities conferred by the history. I will fulfill those responsibilities according to my conscience as a mission for the era”, he added.

The President was speaking at the ‘Amaraviru Piyamaga’ ceremony held yesterday (Oct. 11) at the Hambantota International Conference Hall..

The ceremony has been organized to mark the completion of 25 years of the political life of the General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Mahinda Amaraweera.

“It is the responsibility of the politician to fulfill their responsibilities for the people”, he said. He commended the commitment of Minister Amaraweera for his mission for the people. The President also expressed his best wishes for Minister Amaraweera for his future endeavors.

“Before speaking about the mega development projects and deep philosophies, politicians should recognize the grassroots level issues of the people. The responsibility of the people’s representatives is to look into the day to day problems of the people and to provide solutions for them”, the President further stated.

He pointed out that the politicians should look into the requirements of the people in their areas at a time they are facing difficulties due to insufficient water during this dry weather.

Mr Mahinda Amaraweera was born in a remote village called Udayala in Angunukolapelessa. He received his primary education at Angunukolapalessa primary school and secondary education at Vijitha Central College, Dickwella.

He entered into politics in 1991 by being elected as the President of the Pradeshiya Sabha in Agunakolapelessa.

He was elected as a member of Southern Provincial Council obtaining the highest votes of the Hambantota District from the election held in 1993. He entered the Parliament in 1994 and he has been serving as a Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister and a Cabinet Minister since his entry into politics.
