    Late poet P. B. Alwis Perera awakened people through poetry - President Featured

    The 50th commemoration ceremony of the poet P. B. Alwis Perera was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the National Library and Documentation Services Board, yesterday (22nd Aug.).


    Expressing his views, President said that the P. B. Alwis Perera was a great human being who fulfilled his duties towards the nation. The President recalled the way how he awakened the people through his poetic creations to assist in forming the Bandaranaike government in 1956. He recalled that the late poet had kept a close association with late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike and late Sirimavo Bandaranaike.


    The first copy of the book of selective poetry of P. B. Alwis Perera was presented to the President.  


    The President also recited some poems composed by P. B. Alwis on the assassination of Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike in 1956 and said that those moving poems made the whole nation to shed tears.   


    The revolutionary poems by poet P. B. Alwis Perera nourished the Sri Lankan poetry and made a significant contribution in strengthening the people's revolution. He stood bravely against the colonial power that ruled Sri Lanka.
