    August 12, 2016

The report of the three-member committee appointed to purchase coal was presented in Parliament by Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, on Wednesday (10th Aug.).

The purchase of coal will be done in a transparent and accountable manner in the future said the minister. The members of the committee are Professor K.K.Y.W. Perera- chairman, Professor Lakshman R. Watawala- member, and Professor Janaka Ekanayaka – member.

The three member committee has done an extensive study and even got ideas from the public relating to the questionable tender.

According to the recommendations the spot tender system for the purchase of coal has been introduced and when compared to the long term tender it is cheaper.

By purchasing coal by spot tender in the past year the government has saved USD 7.6 million.

Minister Siyambalapitiya said that the ministry will purchase coal using both types of tenders as it will help to have a buffer stock and also increase the number of supply sources.
