Workshop on Sectoral Oversight Committees for Parliament Members commence

    February 15, 2016

The inaugural session of the three-day workshop on Sectoral Oversight Committees for Members of Parliament was held at Committee Room No. 01 in Parliament, today (15) with the participation of a delegation of UK parliamentarians led by Labour Party MP Ms.Fiona McTaggart.

The purpose of this particular session was to contextualize the recent reforms undertaken by the Parliament of Sri Lanka along with key priorities for the new Parliament.

Overview of parliamentary reforms, aspirations for the Committee System within the current Parliament, overview of the established powers of Sectorial Oversight Committees and Committee on Public Finance, role that the UK Parliament can play in supporting these reforms and Overview of the UK Committee System are on the agenda for today's sessions.

Sri Lanka's Parliament in December last year resolved to suspend Standing Orders that set guidelines for consultative committees which oversees the ministries of the government and instead approved establishing 'Sectoral Oversight Committees' and Committee on Public Finance.

The House approved establishing 16 'Sectoral Oversight Committees' which are empowered to examine all Bills, Resolutions, Treaties, Reports and other matters relating to subjects within their jurisdiction.
