The Election Commissioner by a circular has informed all Heads of Media Institutions to refrain from publishing and broadcasting of programmes of a political nature and political avertisements during 48 hours before the date of poll. Accordingly Media Institutions should not publish and broadcast such programmes, news reports and advertisements from midnight on 26 March 2014.
The Election Commissioner has issued these guidelines to be observed by the Heads of all Media Institutions in publishing and broadcasting of news items, articles, debates etc with regard to the Provincial Council Elections scheduled to be held on 29th March as a good and balanced media coverage is essential for the conduct of a free and fair election.
The Government official news portal is maintains by the New Media Unit of the Department of Government Information and it was titled "news.lk" and commenced in mid1996 and release to Internet from March 01st, 1997.
