    Provision of Rs. 12 billion for the construction of a new National Hospital in Kurunegala - Minister of Health

    Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Minister of Health says that the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, which is many years old, will be converted into a modern technological hospital at a cost
    of Rs. 12 billion.


    The Minister said this at a discussion held at the Ministry of Health  (09) regarding the construction of a new hospital in Kurunegala.

    The Minister said that the hospital is located in the city of Kurunegala where five main roads connect to each other and a large number of people from other districts also come for treatment.

    The Kurunegala General Hospital, which is second only to the Colombo National Hospital and the Kandy Hospital, covers an area of 35 acres. At present the number of beds in the hospital is 2374. The hospital has 84 wards and units. There are 06 operating theaters. There are 65 clinics operating to treat various diseases. The hospital performs about 14,000 surgeries a year. The number of patients who came for treatment in 2020 was 165875.

    Therefore, the Prime Minister is also considering building a new hospital to replace the existing hospital to provide health services to the people, said Health Minister Pavithra
    Wanniarachchi at the discussion.

    Johnston Fernando, Minister of Ports, Shipping, Roads and Highways Development, Prof.Channa Jayasumana, State Minister of Pharmaceutical Supply and Regulation, Dr.
    Asela Gunawardena, Director General of Health Services, Janaka Sri Chandragupta and Dr. Sunil de Alwis Additional Secretaries of the Ministry, The Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital was accompanied by eminent medical officers, representatives of contractors and officials from the Ministry of Health.
