The heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Gin Ganga followed by the rising water level of the river brings improperly dumped garbage and fallen trees and bamboo bushes downstream and traps them under the Wakwella Bridge. Remaining vigilant to such developments often, a group of naval personnel from the Southern Naval Command was recently dispatched to the location and the team managed to restore the swift downstream of water, after clearing the woody and other debris.
This year alone, the Navy has removed debris under the Wakwella and Dodamgoda Bridges on ten (10) occasions, preventing possible flood risks in the area. Meanwhile, the Navy stands ready to respond to all eventualities that would occur in the future as well.
